How we’re Driving Towards Sustainability

Going zero emission by 2035

At Dublin Express, we recognise our role in reducing our environmental impact, and our goals are clear: to deliver top-notch service while leading the way in sustainable practice.

We’re committed to achieving our goal of making our coach fleet zero emission by 2035. To enable people to move where they need to, when they need to, and how they want to, all in the most sustainable ways possible.

As a part of the wider National Express network, we can draw upon insights from our network around the world. For instance, in the UK trials have begun on the adoption of electric coaches on high-frequency routes to the airport. We can share in the results on what impact this will have on emissions and sustainable impact. Initiatives like these allow us to lead the way when it comes to sustainability practices in public transport.

If we consider the fact that a single bus has the capacity to remove the equivalent of 50 cars from the road. We can get an idea of how important public transport is when it comes to curbing emissions and easing congestion. Especially in areas where cars still dominate as the primary mode of transport.

With nearly 7 out of every 10 recorded trips in Ireland being done by car it’s clear there is still massive room to improve. With reports indicating that people feel there isn’t a sufficient service nearby or there is no service going where they need to go. This underscores the importance of connecting routes and communities to make public transport more accessible and appealing to travellers.

New Irish Rail initiative

In October 2023, we began our initiative with Irish Rail to streamline travel to the airport for passengers nationwide. This partnership allows passengers to add a connecting Dublin Express Journey from the end of the rail line at Heuston making travelling by rail a feasible choice when heading to Dublin Airport. Not only making it easier to plan your travel but also removing a potential 90,000 car journeys from Irish roads annually.

We also recently launched our 783 service from Dublin Airport to Terenure which services key areas in Rathgar, Rathmines, Ranelagh, Portobello, and the city centre, which could also see a further 180,000 car trips from the road annually which originate from the south side of Dublin.

By investing in technology that improves individual buses and implementing eco-friendly practices, Dublin Express can significantly reduce its carbon footprint and contribute to a cleaner environment. Additionally, by expanding its routes and increasing frequency, we can encourage more people to choose public transportation over driving, further reducing traffic congestion and emissions in the city, leading the way to a more sustainable future.
